Opening a retail space two months before Christmas has its drawbacks. I didn’t get to the buying shows so I have little new “holiday stock”, I couldn’t just skip fall decorating season even though we opened October 31st, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and a big one for fresh flowers so I have to decorate for Thanksgiving! Alas I am forced to juggle these two wonderful celebrations at the same time and I guess I will feel a bit behind until December 26th when I can begin to think about spring. By the way, the seed catalogs are starting to arrive, yes really!
As I am trying to make each holiday special I am also trying to think up original ideas to keep our shop current and fresh. Our location is a bit out-of-the-way so I have to work hard to meet my customers expectations and bring them back again and again to shop. Which brings me to the title of today’s post. For the last several weeks I have been designing a Christmas stocking out of recycled jeans, felted wool and ticking. I am hoping to sell some at the shop and several of the grand-kids need new ones. Just for the heck of it, I went on Pinterest and looked up stockings. Well, what do you suppose jumped out at me? Yep recycled jeans Christmas stockings. I truly love this site but I can tell you this is not the first time something I made thinking it was original was found right there before my eyes on the web!!! Solomon had it right in Ecclesiastes 1:9b “There is no new thing under the sun.”
Back to the drawing board I went and created this 100% linen Christmas stocking and I truly love it more than the proposed jeans one! At our Family Christmases the stocking plays a major role so this one is ample to hold lots of gifts. Going along with the feed-sack stenciled look and the crumpled linen, I think it would be great in any Holiday setting. The pictures don’t show how old-fashioned it really looks. I will have them available on my website but they won’t ship till the 6th of December.
I think the challenge of trying to be original can be very difficult in this globally focused world, so I am going to continue to make quality and customer service the trademarks of my business. Is any one else having trouble staying original? Do you see your ideas on someone else’s blog or website? Never give up, keep trying, always put your signature style on everything you do creatively a handmade gift is still the most wonderful to give and receive.
PS/ I will publish the directions for the burlap poinsettia after Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours,
